Through ExperiencePolice Homicides Data
While some laws are requiring reporting and tracking of homicides by police, this is a recent development.
In Oregon, we know that cities, police, and district attorneys are failing to report many community members’ deaths, even though the law requires it.

Report Card and Voter Guide
This voter guide and report card includes a brief summary on the powers of the district attorney (DA) from Pacific Northwest Family Circle (PNWFC)—a coalition of families who have lost loved ones to police violence.
Understanding the Law
It's important to understand the different types of legal processes that can arise following situations of police violence. A criminal investigation is conducted by law enforcement to determine whether someone has violated a criminal law, and may lead to criminal charges filed by a prosecutor.
In contrast, civil litigation involves disputes between individuals or entities—such as lawsuits for damages or death—and does not involve criminal penalties. Meanwhile, an administrative investigation is typically carried out by a government agency or professional board to determine whether someone has violated rules or regulations specific to their field, which can lead to penalties like fines or professional discipline.
Each type of legal process has distinct procedures, rights, and consequences. It's important to use a civil rights attorney who has experience with police violence.
